Will questions, answered

Is a template plus two witnesses enough?

Signing matters, but so do the wording, your circumstances and the rules where you live. Get clear answers before you start.

Common questions

Before you begin

Is creating my will really free?

Yes. Creating, editing and downloading your will is free. Live Will membership is optional.

What does Live Will add?

It adds regular check-ins, a private document vault, two-executor release confirmation and limited beneficiary access to allocated documents.

Which countries does OpenWill support?

OpenWill is available worldwide. We provide tailored wording for England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa, and general wording for everywhere else, which a local lawyer can adapt. Will laws vary between countries, so we always show you what applies when you choose your country.

Do inheritance laws in my country affect my will?

They can. Some countries have forced heirship, religious or customary inheritance rules that decide who inherits part of an estate, whatever a will says. If this may apply to you, we recommend speaking to a local lawyer.

Is OpenWill a law firm?

No. OpenWill is a technology service and does not provide legal advice. Your will must be signed and witnessed under the laws that apply where you live. We connect you with partner solicitors and notaries who can confirm it does.

Can I sign my will on paper?

Yes, and in many countries you must. Print your will, sign it in ink in front of two independent witnesses, then upload the signed copy to your vault so it is released to your executors with everything else.
