Free will template questions
Is a free will template legally valid in the UK?
A will made from a free template can be valid in England and Wales if you are 18 or over, of sound mind, sign it in front of two independent witnesses who are both present, and those witnesses sign it too. The template itself does not make it valid — how you sign it does.
Can I download a free will form?
Yes. You can create your will online and download a printable PDF for free. Live Will membership is optional and adds secure vault storage, regular check-ins and two-executor release.
Do I need a solicitor to fill in a will form?
Not to start. Many people with straightforward estates write their own will. If your situation is complex — a business, property abroad, trusts or a blended family — OpenWill can connect you with partner solicitors and notaries to review it.
Who can witness my will?
Two adults who are not beneficiaries and not married to or in a civil partnership with a beneficiary. Both must watch you sign. OpenWill records witness ID checks alongside each signature.
What happens if I change my mind later?
With a paper form you start again. With OpenWill every change creates a new timestamped version, so it is clear which will is the latest.
OpenWill is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. For complex estates, ask a partner solicitor or notary to review your will.
