The drawer problem
What happens after you download
Most printed wills end up in a drawer, a filing box or a loft. Years later, your family may not know it exists, which version is the latest, or where the original is.
If the signed original can't be found, the law may assume you cancelled it. That's why where you keep it matters as much as what it says.
OpenWill fixes the drawer problem: every version is timestamped, your witnesses are ID-verified, and when the time comes your will is released only to the people you name. You still sign on paper and keep the original safe — we make sure the right people know it exists.
Free will download questions
Is the will download really free?
Yes. The printable template and checklist are free, with no sign-up needed. Making your will online and downloading your own will PDF is free too.
Is a downloaded will template legally valid?
It can be, if you fill it in correctly and sign it properly. In England and Wales you sign in wet ink with two adult witnesses present at the same time, and witnesses must not inherit. A template can't check your answers, so ask a solicitor if your situation is complex.
Does this template work in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
It is written for England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, so check GOV.UK, mygov.scot or nidirect, or use OpenWill's country-aware wording.
What should I do with the signed original?
Keep it somewhere safe and tell your executors where it is. A scan or photo is not the original. You can upload a scan to OpenWill so your executors know it exists and where to find it.
Why fill it in online instead?
Online, OpenWill keeps every version timestamped, checks your witnesses' ID, and releases your will only to the people you name. You still sign the final copy in ink.
